The Best Mexican Restaurants in Omaha for Families
Mexican food might be the ultimate family meal. Omaha's most family-friendly spots, from Fernando's to Azteca on the southwest side and La Mesa.
Mexican food might be the ultimate family meal. Chips hit the table before you even order, there's something for everyone, and no kid ever turned down a quesadilla. Omaha's loaded with good spots. Here are a few that welcome the whole crew.
Fernando's has been an Omaha favorite for over 30 years, with made-from-scratch dishes and a warm, welcoming staff who genuinely seem glad you brought the kids. Sizzling fajitas, big combo plates, all the classics done right. It's the kind of place that feels like a regular before your second visit.
Azteca is a great pick on the southwest side. Big plates, sizzling fajitas, and classic combination dinners in a family-friendly room with plenty of booth seating for a stroller and a couple of car seats. It's easy to get to right off 144th and I-80, which matters when you've got a hungry backseat.
La Mesa is a reliable local chain that's been serving up traditional Mexican dishes since 1993, with locations all over the metro. Casual, colorful, quick with the chips and salsa, and easy with a big group. When you just need everybody fed and happy without a fuss, it delivers.
A couple more worth a try are El Muchacho Alegre, which has that warm, laughter-in-the-air family feel, and Roja, another spot folks point newcomers toward for big booths and a big menu.
Little tip that saves the day. Ask for extra chips and a side of plain rice or beans the minute you sit down. It keeps the littlest ones happy and busy while everyone figures out their order, and it heads off the hangry meltdown before it starts.
Hours and locations shift now and then, so give a quick check first. Then go grab a booth and pass the salsa.
