Exploring Benson With Kids: Omaha's Artsy Neighborhood

Explore Omaha· July 1, 2026

Murals on every corner, quirky shops, and a free Handmade Parade. How to explore Benson, Omaha's artsy neighborhood, with the kids.

Benson has a reputation as Omaha's artsy, offbeat neighborhood, and honestly, that's exactly what makes it fun with kids. Murals on nearly every corner, quirky little shops, and a real creative energy. Here's how to explore it with the family.

Start with a mural walk, which costs nothing and the kids love. Benson is covered in bright, bold street art, so make a game of it. Walk the blocks and have everybody hunt for their favorite. Bring your phone and let the kids take pictures of the ones they like best. It turns a regular walk into a little art scavenger hunt.

If you can go on the first Friday of the month, Benson First Friday is a whole event. The neighborhood comes alive with gallery openings, artist markets, live music, and youth activities. It's run by BFF Omaha, and there's usually plenty for kids to see and do. One honest heads-up: First Friday gets a little more grown-up as the night goes on, so with little ones, go earlier in the evening and enjoy the art and the markets before it gets late.

And ice cream, of course. There's a Ted and Wally's location right in Benson, and even the shop has art and installations, which fits the neighborhood perfectly. Cone in hand, keep wandering.

Mark your calendar for something new and wonderful this fall. The Handmade Parade rolls through Benson on Friday, October 2, 2026, as part of the October First Friday. It's a joyful, weird, handmade procession of giant puppets, masks, costumes, and roving performers, and the whole thing is designed to be welcoming for all ages. Kids are invited to make crafts, dress up, and march right along, and it's completely free.

Here's the tip. Benson is best on foot and best when you're not in a hurry. Park, wander, look up at the murals, grab a treat, and let the kids soak up a neighborhood that's proud to be a little different.

Hours and event dates can change, so check before you head out. Then go explore the artsy side of Omaha.
