Midtown Crossing With Kids: Omaha's Turner Park
Turner Park at Midtown Crossing is one of Omaha's best free family hangouts, from Jazz on the Green to the Chalk Art Festival and winter Season of Lights.
Right in the middle of Omaha sits Midtown Crossing, and its big green heart, Turner Park, is one of the best free family hangouts in the city. There's almost always something happening. Here's how to enjoy it with the kids.
Turner Park itself is a big, open, well-kept lawn surrounded by the neighborhood, perfect for spreading out a blanket, tossing a ball, or letting the kids run. The real draw is that Midtown Crossing keeps it packed with free events all year long.
In the summer, the crown jewel is Jazz on the Green, Omaha's most beloved concert tradition, free on Thursday nights in July and August. Families come early, lay out blankets, pack a picnic, and let the kids dance in the grass while the music plays. It's a genuine Omaha rite of summer.
There's plenty more throughout the year. The Chalk Art Festival turns the streets and sidewalks into a giant canvas and is great fun for kids. There's an open-air Night Market with local makers, plus scavenger hunts and goofy themed events (there's literally an annual Pickle Party). And come winter, the whole neighborhood lights up with the Season of Lights display, a magical, free evening walk for when it's cold out and you need something to do.
Here's the tip. Check the Midtown Crossing event calendar before you go, because the neighborhood is at its best when something's happening in Turner Park. Pack a blanket and a picnic, get there a little early for the popular events, and settle in.
Hours and event dates change with the seasons, so double-check before you head out. Then go enjoy the green heart of Omaha.
