The Best Sandwich and Deli Shops in Omaha

Explore Omaha· July 2, 2026

The Reuben was born right here in Omaha, and the sandwich scene never looked back. Here's where to get a proper deli lunch, from Crescent Moon's Blackstone Reuben to Little King and Time Out Foods.

Here's a thing that surprises a lot of people, even folks who've lived here their whole lives. The Reuben, that corned beef, kraut, and Swiss on rye that shows up on menus all over the country, was invented right here in Omaha. Story goes it was dreamed up at the old Blackstone Hotel back in the 1920s, for a group of late-night poker players, one of them a grocer named Reuben Kulakofsky. A waitress from the Blackstone later entered it in a national contest and won, and the rest is sandwich history. So no pressure, Omaha, but we kind of set the bar. Here's where to eat a great one, and a bunch of other sandwiches worth the drive.

Start where the Reuben belongs. Crescent Moon Ale House sits on Farnam, just steps from the original Blackstone Hotel in the Blackstone District, and their Blackstone Reuben is the one to order. Slow-roasted corned beef, house-made kraut, house thousand island, Swiss, all on marble rye. It's the definitive Omaha version and they're proud of it. It's a craft beer bar too, so it leans more grown-up than kid-central, but families come in early and it's an easy call for a weekend lunch. They even do a Reuben egg roll if you want to get weird with it.

For the Omaha original that's been feeding this town since 1969, it's Little King Deli & Subs. Founded right here at 80th and Dodge, they slice the meat fresh in front of you and bake the bread daily, and there are seven locations across the metro so there's one near wherever you are. Dine in, drive thru, order ahead. It's fast, it's cheap, and it's the sub shop a lot of Omaha kids grew up on. Perfect for a no-drama family lunch.

Downtown, Wilson & Washburn on Harney is the from-scratch spot the lunch crowd loves. Their house-smoked Reuben is a standout, and the whole kitchen has that make-it-right attitude. It's a neighborhood bar as much as a sandwich shop, so it's better for a grown-up lunch or an older-kid outing than a toddler afternoon, but the food's genuinely good and it's a fun downtown room. Closed Mondays (as of July 2026).

Now for the one nobody expects to love as much as they do. Cubby's Old Market at 13th and Jackson is technically a gas station and grocery store, downtown's only one, but the full deli in the back makes hot, made-to-order sandwiches all day and there's a real meat counter too. It's open 24 hours (as of July 2026), it's cheap, and it's an Old Market secret that in-the-know folks swear by. Grab a sandwich, grab groceries, done. Very family-easy.

Up in North Omaha, Time Out Foods on North 30th is a piece of Omaha history, one of the oldest Black-owned businesses in the city, family-run since 1971. It's famous for its fried chicken, but the Time Out Sandwich, a hot chicken breast on a bun, is the move and it's a genuine local legend. It's a smaller spot with limited hours, closed Sundays and Mondays (as of July 2026), so check before you go, but it's absolutely worth building a lunch around. Our locally-owned diners guide is full of Omaha institutions like this one.

And if you want the deli experience with an Italian accent, Nicola's in the Old Market does family-owned Italian, wine, and house-made fare in an intimate downtown room. It's dinner service rather than a grab-a-sub-at-noon place, so treat it as the date-night or special-occasion end of the deli spectrum. Reservations are smart on weekends.

Quick tip that saves your lunch hour. The downtown and Old Market spots get a real weekday rush right at noon, and a walk-in at 12:15 can mean a wait. Go a little before, around 11:30 a.m., or a little after, closer to 1 p.m., and you glide right in. And if you're taking a sandwich to a park, most of these will wrap it to go without blinking.

That's the sandwich map for a town that literally invented one of America's great sandwiches. A proper Reuben, a fresh-sliced sub, or a fried chicken legend up north. Pick one and go eat well. If you're building a whole downtown day around it, our family-friendly restaurants guide pairs nicely with an Old Market lunch stop.

Then go get the good stuff, and order the Reuben at least once, for history's sake.
