Millard: A Family Neighborhood Guide
Millard is Omaha's largest bedroom community for a reason, with top schools, quiet streets, and easy access to Zorinsky Lake, trails, and shady neighborhood parks.
Ask Omaha families where they want to raise kids and Millard comes up again and again. This sprawling southwest section of the city grew up around strong schools and quiet, tree-lined streets, and it has become the metro's largest bedroom community. What makes it worth a guide, though, is not just where people live but how easy it is to spend a good day here with kids. Green space is everywhere, and the crown jewel is one of the best parks in the city.
That jewel is Zorinsky Lake Park, straddling the line between West Omaha and Millard around 156th and F Streets. The lake covers more than 255 acres and the surrounding park offers two modern playgrounds, baseball diamonds, soccer and football fields, and miles of paved trail that loop the water. The smaller loop runs about 3.15 miles and the larger about 4.44 miles, with green markers every tenth of a mile so kids can track their progress like a game. Families fish for walleye, bass, bluegill, and channel catfish from the banks and the universally accessible fishing dock, and a recently added inclusive playground makes the park welcoming for children of all abilities. It is the kind of place where you can bike, picnic, and let the afternoon stretch out.
Millard's smaller parks are worth knowing too. Walnut Grove Park is a quieter, rarely crowded spot with picnic pavilions, an interesting play structure, spring-rider ponies, and swings, plus a nearby lagoon and walking paths that make it feel like a hidden pocket of calm. And the neighborhood's namesake Millard Park stretches between roughly 156th and 168th Streets, where multiuse paths wind past the South Papillion Creek through shaded groves, with a playground full of slides, bridges, and climbing structures and plenty of benches for the grown-ups.
Why Families Choose Millard
The short answer is schools and space. Millard Public Schools is one of Nebraska's most respected districts, and the neighborhoods around it were built with families in mind, with sidewalks, cul-de-sacs, and parks within an easy walk or bike ride. Everyday errands are simple here, and weekend fun rarely requires a long drive. When you do want to eat out, the area is well stocked with family-friendly options. Our roundup of where families eat around Omaha is a good place to start planning a meal between park visits.
A Simple Millard Day
Here is an easy plan. Start the morning at Zorinsky Lake with bikes or a stroller and take the shorter loop, stopping at a playground along the way. Pack a picnic for the shore, or head to Walnut Grove Park for a quieter lunch under the pavilions. In the afternoon, let the kids climb and run at Millard Park before you point the car home. Bring sunscreen, water, and a fishing pole if anyone in the family is curious about what is biting.
Millard also sits close to the rest of West Omaha's family attractions, so it blends easily into a bigger itinerary. If you have a full weekend, you might branch out toward the small-town feel of nearby communities or add a riverfront stop like family fun in Bellevue on the other side of town.
