Day Trip: Platte River State Park
Just half an hour from Omaha near Louisville, Platte River State Park offers waterfalls, observation towers, hiking, paddle boats, and cozy cabins and tepees. Here is how to make it a perfect family day trip.
When your family needs a real dose of the outdoors but you do not want to spend the whole day in the car, Platte River State Park is the answer. Sitting on the wooded bluffs above the Platte River near Louisville, it is only about a 25 to 30 minute drive from Omaha, close enough for an easy day trip and beautiful enough to feel like a genuine getaway. If you have only ever stopped at nearby Mahoney State Park, this is your reminder that Platte River is its own distinct adventure, quieter, wooded, and full of charm.
Why Platte River Is Its Own Thing
Mahoney gets a lot of the attention, but Platte River State Park has a character all its own. Spread across more than 450 acres of forested bluffs, it feels tucked away and peaceful, with trails winding through dense woods and dramatic views of the Platte River basin. You can plan your visit and check current hours, fees, and any seasonal closures on the official Nebraska Game and Parks page for the park. A valid Nebraska park entry permit is required, which you can buy online or at the gate.
Chase the Waterfall
The park's most beloved feature is Stone Creek Falls, a genuinely pretty little waterfall reached by a moderate hike through the woods. The Stone Creek Trail is mostly wide and shaded, following the creek through cool, leafy forest, and the falls at the end make a perfect turnaround point and photo spot. It is a manageable walk for most kids old enough to hike, and the payoff feels earned. Pack water, wear good shoes, and let the little ones set the pace.
Climb the Tower
For a big view without a hard climb, head to one of the park's observation towers. The lookout rewards you with a sweeping view over the treetops to the Platte River basin below, the kind of vista that makes kids feel like they have reached the top of the world. It is a favorite stop for a snack break and a family photo.
Hit the Water
On Jenny Newman Lake you can rent paddle boats and glide across the water together, an easy, low-key activity that even younger children love. Fishing is popular here too, so bring a pole if that is your family's thing. It is the kind of unhurried water time that makes a summer day feel complete.
See the Wildlife Next Door
Here is a fun bonus for animal lovers. Right beside the state park sits the Wildlife Safari Park, a separate Nebraska Game and Parks drive-through and walking adventure where you can see North American animals including bison, elk, deer, and more from the comfort of your car or along its trails. It has its own entrance and admission, but pairing the two makes for an unforgettable full day. Check the Game and Parks site for current hours and pricing before you go.
Stay a Little Longer
If one day is not enough, Platte River is built for overnight stays too. The park offers modern cabins with kitchenettes, cozy camper cabins, and even rustic tepees that sleep six to eight, a huge hit with kids who want a real adventure. Reservations fill up fast in summer, so book early through the Game and Parks reservation system if you want to turn your day trip into a weekend.
Good to Know for Families
Bring bug spray, sunscreen, water, and snacks, and wear real walking shoes for the trails. Cell service can be spotty in the woods, so download any maps ahead of time. And check the official park page for seasonal offerings, since some activities and rentals run only in the warmer months.
