A Family Guide to Bennington, Nebraska

Explore Omaha· July 11, 2026

Bennington sits in the northwest corner of the Omaha metro, a small town the suburbs never quite swallowed. A family guide to the downtown, the ice cream, the lake, and Bennington Daze.

You can be standing on the sidewalk downtown, a coffee in one hand and a kid's melting ice cream cone in the other, and forget you're only twenty-odd minutes from downtown Omaha. That's Bennington. It sits up in the northwest corner of the Omaha metro, a small town the suburbs mostly swallowed but never quite tamed. Here's how to spend an easy family afternoon in it.

Start where the kids will make you start. Cup & Cone at 15420 South 2nd Street is the heart of a family trip out here, a locally owned shop doing coffee for the grownups and custard, shakes, and cones for everybody under four feet tall. There are smoothies and lemonades for the kid who claims not to want ice cream, which never actually happens, but just in case. Order at the counter, grab a table, nobody's in a hurry.

Downtown Bennington is small, a couple of blocks of Main Street, and that's the whole charm of it. You can walk the entire thing. Earl & Gray is a locally owned home and gift shop that's good for a slow browse, candles and decor and the kind of thing that makes a nice Mother's Day gift. Poke in, let the kids look, move on. That's the pace here.

When somebody needs to burn off energy, head for the water. Bennington Lake sits inside the Newport Landing neighborhood, and here's the thing to know so you don't wander somewhere you shouldn't: the lake itself is private, for residents, but there's public access on the north side with a fishing pier and a paved walking trail. The full loop is a little over five miles, so with little legs you just do a piece of it from the north end, watch the water, maybe bring a pole. It's quiet, it's pretty, and it's free.

There's also Stone Creek Park nearby, over in the Copper Ridge subdivision, with a toddler playground, a bigger-kid playground, ball fields, and a little amphitheater. One honest note: it technically sits just inside Omaha's city limits rather than Bennington proper, but it's right in the same orbit and it's your best bet for a real playground.

Rainy day, or you just need an indoor hour, the Bennington Public Library on North 156th Street is your friend. It's a genuine community hub with kids' programming, so check the calendar for a storytime before you go. A good small-town library is one of the quiet gifts of raising a family out this way.

If you can time a visit for early June, do it. Bennington Daze is the town's big weekend, and it leans exactly the direction a family-first crowd appreciates. There's a parade that rolls off from the high school down Bennington Road, fireworks, a farmers market, kids' activities, and even a community worship service worked into the weekend. It's the whole town out on the lawn, and it's the single best day to feel what Bennington actually is.

A few honest heads-ups so you're not let down. Bennington doesn't have a big municipal splash pad, so if soaking wet is the goal you'll head back toward Omaha for one of those. Downtown dining is limited and a couple of the spots lean bar-side, so for a reliable family bite it's Cup & Cone or the dependable Nebraska staple, a Runza, which has never once failed a hungry carload.

Here's the tip. Do Bennington in the late afternoon. Walk the couple of downtown blocks, get the ice cream, then drive over and stroll the north side of the lake while the light goes gold. You'll have had a genuinely nice, cheap, unhurried outing without ever fighting real-city traffic. If you like this park-once, walk-the-block kind of day, Omaha's Dundee neighborhood runs on the same easy energy closer to the middle of town.

Hours change, especially at the small shops, so give a quick check before you drive out. Then go enjoy the quieter corner of the metro.
