Scenic Drive and Sunset Date Nights in Omaha

Explore Omaha· July 11, 2026

The cheapest good date in Omaha is a pretty drive, an overlook, and a sunset. Here are the metro spots with the best views to end the day together.

Some of the best dates my wife and I have had cost exactly one tank of gas. You pick a spot with a view, you time it for sundown, and you sit there while the sky does its thing over the river. No bill, no crowd, no rush. Omaha and the bluffs across the river in Iowa have a surprising number of these, so here's where to point the car when you want a sunset instead of a restaurant.

Start with the best one. The Lewis & Clark Monument and Scenic Overlook sits up on the Loess Hills bluffs in Council Bluffs, a short winding drive up from the river, maybe fifteen minutes from downtown Omaha. You're looking due west, straight at the Omaha skyline with the river and the airport spread out below, which means the sun sets right behind the city for you. It's the standout view in the whole metro. It's free and open until ten, so you've got time.

Downtown, the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge and the RiverFront are the classic move. Walk out over the Missouri with the skyline behind you, put one foot in Nebraska and one in Iowa, and watch the light go pink on the water. It's lit at night, it's flat and easy, and it connects to the Gene Leahy Mall and Heartland of America Park so you can make a loop of it. The Heartland fountain runs a nightly light show from eight to eleven in the warm months, which is genuinely pretty after the sun's down.

Want water and quiet instead of skyline? West Omaha has a couple. Zorinsky Lake off 156th has a paved loop around a big open lake, an easy flat walk with the sun going down over the water. Standing Bear Lake up near 132nd is calmer and less crowded, more of a hidden-corner feel. Both are free and both close at eleven, so you're fine for a sunset. A little farther out, Chalco Hills and Wehrspann Lake near 154th and Giles gives you rolling hills and open western sky, and the drive out there already feels like leaving the city.

Across the river, Lake Manawa just off I-80 in Council Bluffs is a big natural lake with wide-open water for a west-facing sunset, about ten minutes from downtown Omaha. Nebraska plates pay a small daily fee to drive in, but the view over the lake is worth the few bucks.

A few tips so the night goes smooth. Check the sunset time on your phone and get there twenty minutes early, because the best color often comes right before and right after the sun actually drops. Know your closing times, since most of these parks lock the gates around ten or eleven. Toss a blanket and a couple of waters in the trunk. And leave the radio on something quiet and just talk, because that's the whole point of getting away from the house.

God gave you each other for the long haul, and the long haul is built out of ordinary evenings like this far more than the big expensive ones. A drive, a view, a sunset, and an hour that belongs to just the two of you. That's a real date, and in Omaha it's usually free. Hours and gate times change, so check before you head out. Then go catch the sunset together.
