Omaha's Best Fall Festivals of 2026: A Family Bucket List

Explore Omaha· August 28, 2026

These are the last big outdoor family celebrations before winter and the holidays roll in. Here are the best fall festivals in and around Omaha for 2026, with verified dates and official links, from Vala's and AppleJack to glowing hot air balloons and a free kite festival.

There's a short, golden stretch every autumn when the whole Omaha metro feels built for families. The corn stands tall, the pumpkins turn heavy on the vine, and the evenings cool off just enough for a hoodie without anyone shivering. It doesn't last. Before you know it, the leaves are down, the holiday calendar swallows every weekend, and these wide-open farm days are gone until next year. So consider this your nudge: block off a couple of weekends now, while the weather is still on your side.

Here are the fall festivals worth building a family bucket list around this year, listed in the order they happen. One quick heads-up before you load the van. These dates are accurate as of August 2026, but weather and schedules change, so give the official page one last look before you go.

Vala's Apple & Cider Festival kicks off the season September 4 through 30 out in Gretna, and for a lot of families it's the first real taste of fall. Ride out to the orchard, pick your own apples, and wander acres of blooming sunflowers. The free butterfly releases over the sunflower field are a hit with the little ones, and the fresh-pressed sweet cider is worth the short drive on its own. Come hungry.

Fields of Flight Hot Air Balloon Festival lights up Ditmars Orchard in Council Bluffs on September 11 and 12. As the sun drops, the balloons fire up and glow across the field like giant lanterns, and it's the kind of sight kids talk about for weeks afterward. Bring blankets and camp chairs, and get there early, because admission is by the carload and tickets tend to sell out ahead of time.

Nelson Produce Farm Fall Festival runs September 11 all the way through November 1 in Valley, just west of the city. This one is built for turning kids loose: a giant jumping pillow, a barrel train, a corn pit, animals to feed, and eight acres of pumpkins in more shapes and colors than you knew existed. Grab a bag of hot apple cider donuts, find a firepit, and let the afternoon stretch out.

AppleJack Festival is a Nebraska City tradition, spread across two weekends this year: September 18 through 20 and September 26 through 27. Arbor Day Farm sits at the heart of it, with U-pick apples, free orchard hayrack rides, and cider donuts made right on the property. Don't miss the AppleJack parade rolling through downtown Nebraska City at 1 p.m. on Saturday, September 19. It's about a 45-minute drive south, and it makes a full, easy day trip.

Vala's Pumpkin Harvest Festival takes over that same Gretna farm through October, roughly October 1 through 31, once the pumpkins are ready to pick. This is peak patch season: hayrack rides out to the field, pumpkins as far as you can see, and pumpkin everything, from glazed donuts to fudge. Family-friendly trick-or-treating fills the last two days of the month if you want to carry the fun right up to Halloween.

Ditmars Orchard Pumpkin Festival celebrates all things pumpkin on the weekends of October 10-11 and 17-18, back in Council Bluffs. Hunt for the hidden golden pumpkin to win a prize, paint your own, ride the tractor, wind through the corn maze, and go say hello to the goats. Kids three and under get in free, and the fresh pumpkin doughnuts come out of the fryer all day long.

La Vista Fall Kite Festival closes out the season on October 11 at the La Vista Soccer Complex, and the best part is it's completely free. Some of the biggest, most colorful kites in the country take to the sky, and there are candy drops all afternoon, so pack a bag and bring a kite of your own if you've got one. It's a simple, low-key outing that's easy on the wallet and works for every age.

That's seven festivals, and you don't need to hit all of them. Pick the two or three that fit your crew and your calendar, and go soon. These are the last big outdoor family celebrations of the year around Omaha, and once that first hard freeze settles in, the pumpkins and the hot air balloons pack up until next fall. Grab the flannel, charge the camera, and make the most of this season while the leaves are still turning.
