Hanscom Park Movie Night: A Free Omaha Family Tradition
Hanscom Park Summer Movie Night is a free outdoor film night for Omaha families. Here's the date, what to bring, and how to claim a good spot.
Kids on a blanket. Popcorn. A movie up on a big screen while the sun goes down. And it costs you nothing.
That's Hanscom Park Summer Movie Night, and around here it's one of those summer things families just keep coming back to.
If you're hunting for things to do in Omaha with kids that are actually free, outdoor movie nights sit near the top. Hanscom Park, right in the middle of the neighborhood, turns into an open-air theater on summer evenings. Good for bonding, good for laughs, good for the kind of night you'll actually remember.
So what makes it worth the trip?
It's free. No tickets, no surprise fees. Bring a blanket and show up. It also works for pretty much any age. The little ones sometimes doze off on the blanket, which, let's be honest, is a win for bedtime later. The older kids like being out and social. And there's something old-fashioned about it in the best way, the kind of night where you see grandparents and toddlers and groups of friends all spread out for the same simple reason. Nobody's buried in a phone either. They're just there, in it.
Here's what you need to know. It's Saturday, June 22, 2026. Come around 6:30 PM to set up your blanket. The movie starts around 8:00 PM, right at dusk. It's at Hanscom Park in Omaha, NE, and it's free. All ages are welcome, though it's best for ages 3 and up. Parking on-site is free, and popcorn and snacks are available to buy. If the weather looks iffy, check the Omaha Parks website the day of.
A few things I've learned. Get there early. The good spots go by around 7:15 PM, so aim for 6:45 p.m. to grab a comfortable view. Bring layers too. June evenings in Omaha cool off once the sun's down, so a hoodie is smart, especially for the kids. Concessions are there and reasonably priced, but you can pack your own, and either way, bring wet wipes for the sticky popcorn hands. Honestly, just make it a picnic. Toss juice boxes and sandwiches in a small cooler and the kids treat the whole thing like an adventure. Scope out where the bathrooms are before the movie starts, that one matters with little ones. And keep your phone on silent once it's rolling, out of respect for everybody else on the grass.
Hanscom isn't your only shot at a free outdoor movie this summer, by the way. Midtown Crossing Friday Night Movies run in June and July, free, with lawn chairs encouraged. The Family Fun in Omaha movie series has multiple parks hosting free films through June and July. And Marcus Theaters Kids Movie Magic offers ultra-affordable $3 tickets for daytime family showings from June 7 through August 13 (as of July 2026). All good options, and you can find the full rundown in our guide to free summer movie nights in Omaha. But the Hanscom Park version has its own thing going, the park setting, the community feel, the room to spread out and make the night your own.
With entertainment getting more expensive every year, free nights like this one turn into real traditions. Any family can come, whatever the budget, and it's the kind of thing your kids bring up the next summer. Can we go to the movie night again.
So this Saturday, June 22nd, grab the blankets, round up the family, and head to Hanscom Park. Leave the screens at home, except the big one, and go make a memory under the Omaha sky. Summer doesn't last. Use it.
