Why Omaha Is the Midwest Family Road Trip Worth Taking This Summer

Explore Omaha· June 19, 2026

Skip the crowded, overpriced spots this summer. Here's why Omaha, Nebraska makes a genuinely great Midwest road trip for families.

It usually comes up over dinner sometime in May. Where are we taking the kids this year.

And then the same names come up. The same crowded places everybody goes, where the hotel rates jump and the lines wrap around the building. Fine. But there's another kind of trip out there, and honestly it doesn't get talked about enough.

Omaha, Nebraska. If you haven't thought about it, this is the year. Let me walk you through why.

Start with money, because family trips are expensive and pretending otherwise helps nobody. Gas, hotels, food, tickets. It stacks up fast. Omaha just doesn't punish you for it. Hotels run genuinely cheaper here than at the big tourist cities. A lot of the best stuff to do costs nothing. You can burn a whole day exploring and your only real expense is lunch at some diner. What that buys you is the ability to actually relax instead of doing math in your head all afternoon. You can say yes to one more thing without wincing.

Then there's the stuff you'll actually do. A lot of vacation attractions are built to move you through a line and empty your wallet, interesting for twenty minutes and then done. Omaha's are different. The Henry Doorly Zoo is world-class, and it rewards you for slowing down instead of sprinting through. The Durham Museum teaches local history in a way that sticks with kids. The Kiewit Luminarium is real hands-on STEM. Roller skating rinks, adventure parks, gardens to wander, trails, live music where families are actually welcome, restaurants where the staff starts to remember you. Places where your family engages instead of just consuming.

Here's a thing I didn't expect. Omaha still feels like a real city. Neighborhoods with character. Local businesses that matter. An actual community identity, not the flattened, could-be-anywhere feeling you get in a lot of tourist zones. Your kids aren't just passing through a manufactured landscape. They're seeing how a different part of the country actually lives. On a road trip, that teaches more than a dozen attractions could.

And the Plains. People sleep on the Midwest because it isn't mountains or beaches. Their loss. There's a specific kind of beauty out here that catches you off guard once you pay attention. Wide open spaces. Big skies. Rivers and parks and trails. Weather that flips hourly. For kids who grow up hemmed in by development, this stuff is genuinely restorative. Walk the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge and the river views surprise people. The Walnut Creek Trail system gives you real nature within minutes. The Elkhorn River has beaches and access points. Hanscom Park is an enormous green space that feels like a secret the city keeps. None of it requires a five-hour drive into the mountains. It's just there.

What I like most, though, is that Omaha fits the way families actually travel. The best trips aren't the ones with the longest checklist. They're the ones where you have time to just be together. Here you don't have to choose between the must-see stuff and actual family time. Do the zoo, grab lunch somewhere local, wander through Old Market, catch some music in the evening, and still have unrushed hours where you're just hanging out. Find a frozen custard spot and sit outside. Stay more than a day and settle into a rhythm instead of a sprint.

And if you're the kind of family that thinks about where your time and money go, there's a warmth to Midwest hospitality that isn't marketing. It's just how people operate here. Families are everywhere and genuinely welcoming. Faith-oriented activities and resources are easy to find. The pace is slower, the connections more real.

So don't overcomplicate it. Load the car, point it toward Omaha, give yourself a few days to actually be there. Your family is worth the time, and this stop is worth the drive.
