The Best Indoor Play Places in Omaha
Rainy Saturday or twenty below, the kids still have to burn it off somewhere. Here are the Omaha indoor play spots that actually deliver, plus the socks-and-price stuff nobody tells you.
It's raining sideways and the kids have already circled the living room forty times. You know the feeling. Or it's January and the windchill is a number nobody should say out loud. Either way, they've got to move, and it's not happening in the backyard.
Good news. Omaha does not run short on places to turn loose a pile of energy under a roof. Here's what's actually worth it, plus the stuff you only find out once you're standing at the front counter, like whether they make you buy special socks.
The Omaha Children's Museum downtown at 20th and Howard is the one I'd point a first-timer to. It's built for the touch-everything, pretend-everything crowd, science stuff, an arts studio, play areas scaled for the littlest ones. It's less about burning energy and more about curiosity, but a couple hours there melts a bad-weather day fast. We went deeper on it, exhibits and all, in our Children's Museum family guide. Hours and tickets are at ocm.org. It's closed Mondays, so plan around that.
Now if what you need is pure physical chaos, trampolines. Sky Zone out at 133rd and Millard Ave is the OG, wall-to-wall trampolines, a foam pit, dodgeball, plus a Toddler Zone for the small fry so they're not getting bowled over by ten-year-olds. Grippy Sky Zone socks are required and they cost a few bucks, so save the pair for next time. Then there's Urban Air Adventure Park way out on Weir Street near 153rd, which does trampolines plus climbing walls and go-karts and a ropes course. Different attractions are priced in different wristband tiers, so figure out what your kid actually wants before you pay. Socks required there too.
The Amazing Pizza Machine down by 139th and the Industrial Road area is the loud, glorious, arcade-and-rides combo that turns into every kid's birthday dream. Bumper cars, mini golf, a full arcade, and yeah, a pizza buffet. It's not cheap once the game cards get going, but it's a whole afternoon in one building. Note it's closed Mondays and Tuesdays. Check hours at amazingpizzamachine.com before you drive out.
Fun-Plex is mostly the outdoor summer waterpark everybody knows, over at 70th and Q, but I'm mentioning it because it's the go-to when it's hot rather than cold. Fun-Plex runs seasonally, so it's a summer answer, not a rainy-January one. Worth keeping in the back pocket.
For the toddler-and-preschool set, two smaller spots are worth knowing. Kipp out at 144th and West Center is a big soft-play park in the old Shopko building, huge climbing structures, slides, the works. They require their own Kipp socks, about three bucks, reusable if you keep them clean. And Kids Plays tucked inside Oak View Mall at 144th and Center is a jungle gym with a ball pit and crawler zones, aimed squarely at the younger crowd. It's closed Mondays. Both are calmer and cheaper than the trampoline parks, which matters when your kid is three and easily flattened.
Here's a free one people forget. The library. Do Space, the tech-and-maker spot, now lives inside the new Omaha Central Library and runs 3D printers, studios, all kinds of gear, and it's part of the library system now. Details are at Do Space. Honestly the branch libraries themselves are an underrated rainy-day move, warm, free, and full of story times. We're big on that around here, as you can tell from our piece on reading aloud and the Omaha Public Library.
Quick heads-up: the old CoCo Key indoor waterpark near 72nd and Grover is gone, closed and torn down years back, so don't go looking for it.
A couple parent tips to save you grief. Weekday mornings are the golden hours, less crowded, sometimes cheaper. Check the socks rule and the closed days before you leave, because nothing sours a drive across town like a locked door. And when the little ones finally crash on the ride home, maybe reward yourself. Our roundup of cozy Omaha coffee shops that welcome kids pairs nicely with a morning of controlled mayhem.
