The Best Frozen Yogurt and Custard in Omaha

Custard, froyo, and the difference between them. Where to cool off in Omaha, from Zesto in Florence to Freddy's, Andy's, and pile-your-own Orange Leaf.

Ninety-five degrees, kid melting down in the back seat, and you need a cold treat fast. Omaha delivers. Custard's the thicker, richer, egg-yolk cousin of soft serve. Froyo's the tangy pile-your-own kind. Both count as a good afternoon. Here's where to go for each.

Custard first, because Omaha does it well. Zesto is the old landmark, family-run and around for more than 70 years, with a longtime shop up in the Florence neighborhood. Soft serve, grill food, the whole drive-in feel your grandparents would recognize. It's the kind of place that just feels like Omaha summer.

For the newer, cooked-to-order crowd, Freddy's Frozen Custard and Steakburgers has spots all over, out in Millard, near Dodge, over on Maple. Their custard concretes are thick enough to hold a spoon straight up. And Andy's Frozen Custard is the walk-up-window one people get loyal about, the Jackhammer being the thing to order if you've got a serious sweet tooth and no plans after.

Then there's Culver's, which most folks think of for the ButterBurgers but the fresh frozen custard is the real move. They post a flavor of the day, so it's worth checking what's churning before you pick a location. Locations are scattered across the metro, from Miami Street to Millard.

Now froyo, the self-serve kind where the kids go a little wild with the toppings. Orange Leaf has two Omaha shops, one on 71st and one over on Burke Street. You grab a cup, pull your own swirls, load up the toppings bar, and pay by weight. Which sounds fun until your six-year-old builds a sundae the size of a softball. Learn from my mistakes. Give them a cup size limit before you hand over the cup.

A quick honest note, because accuracy matters here. A few Omaha favorites are technically ice cream, not custard or froyo, but they're too good to leave out of the cold-treat conversation. Ted and Wally's down in the Old Market has been churning ultra-premium homemade ice cream since 1984, with a Benson shop too. eCreamery in Dundee, the one that showed up on Shark Tank, rotates a dozen small-batch flavors. And Coneflower Creamery in the Blackstone District does farm-to-cone ice cream that changes with the season. Different category, same happy kid. We put the full rundown on our best ice cream shops list if that's more your speed.

One tip for the whole crew. Summer evenings these places get a line, especially the walk-up windows after dinner. Go a little before the rush or a little after, and you skip the wait entirely. Hours shift seasonally too, so peek before you drive out.

That's the cold-treat map. Custard, froyo, or the ice cream in between. Pick one and go cool everybody down. If you're building a whole food day, our family-friendly restaurants guide pairs nicely with a custard stop for dessert.
