The Back-to-School Family Guide for Omaha

Explore Omaha· July 1, 2026

Start dates for OPS, Millard, Elkhorn, Westside, Papillion-La Vista and Bellevue, where to shop for supplies, easing kids back into a routine, and Omaha backpack drives that need your help.

There's a specific August evening when it hits you. The pool towels are still damp on the fence, and somehow the first day of school is nine days out. Every Omaha parent knows that little jolt. So let's get ahead of it this year. Here's the plan, dates and all.

First, when does school actually start? It depends on your district, and the metro spreads across a bunch of them.

Omaha Public Schools runs a staggered start for 2026-2027. Kindergarten and entry-level middle and high school grades go back August 19, everybody else K-12 on August 20, and Pre-K on August 26. Millard Public Schools starts earlier, August 12. Papillion La Vista Community Schools begins August 12 for K-7 and 9th graders, with the rest starting August 13.

Out west, Elkhorn Public Schools posts its 2026-2027 calendar online, and Westside Community Schools keeps its dates under the For Families section. For families in Sarpy County, Bellevue Public Schools lists its calendar too. Dates shift year to year, so pull the exact first day for your kid's building straight off the district site before you lock in vacation plans.

One thing to clear up, because somebody always asks. Nebraska does not have a back-to-school sales tax holiday. Some states knock off sales tax for a weekend in July or August. We don't. So don't wait around for a tax-free window that isn't coming. Just shop when the deals are good.

And the deals are easy to find here. Nebraska Furniture Mart out on the west side is a solid one-stop for backpacks, electronics, and the desk setup if you've got a middle schooler who suddenly needs a real workspace. For the pencils, folders, and the very specific glue stick the supply list demands, the Target stores around the metro and the usual big-box spots handle it. My tip: buy the list once, then stash a small backup pile of the stuff that vanishes, glue sticks, pencils, those go missing by October.

Before the routine kicks in, there's the harder part. Getting everybody back on a sleep schedule.

Summer wrecks bedtimes. Nobody's immune. The fix isn't dramatic, just early. About two weeks out, start pulling bedtime back by 15 or 20 minutes every few nights until you're near a school-night hour. Wake them a little earlier too, so the mornings don't turn into a fight day one. Kids run better on a rhythm they can count on, and easing into it beats slamming into it. We dug into why that steadiness matters in our piece on the steady rhythms of home.

Don't let the reading habit die on August 1 either. The Omaha Public Library summer reading program wraps up July 31, so the last few weeks are the time to finish those trackers and cash in the prizes, including a Storm Chasers ticket voucher. Then keep a few library books in rotation once school starts. Fifteen minutes of reading a night carries a surprising amount of weight. Our post on reading aloud to your kids makes the case better than I can here.

Here's the part that's easy to skip and shouldn't be. Not every Omaha family can just swing by Target and fill a cart. Backpacks and supplies add up fast, and for a lot of local kids that gap is real. A few metro nonprofits work every August to close it. Completely KIDS collects filled backpacks at its office on St. Mary's Avenue. SHARE Omaha runs a summer back-to-school drive that pools supplies across a stack of local nonprofits for thousands of area students. If you're buying your own list anyway, grabbing one extra backpack to donate is a small thing that lands big for another family down the street.

One more idea before the whistle blows. Squeeze the last drops out of summer. A final unhurried afternoon at one of the best parks in Omaha for families does more for everybody's nerves than one more trip to the store. The pencils will still be there tomorrow.
