A Family Guide to Ralston
Tucked inside the Omaha metro, Ralston keeps a small-town heart. Here's a family-first guide to its arena, aquatics center, walkable Main Street, and friendly community parks.
If you want the feel of a small town without leaving the Omaha metro, point the family car toward Ralston. This tidy little suburb is entirely surrounded by Omaha, yet it has kept its own identity, its own school district, and a genuine small-town spirit. It is the kind of place where the Fourth of July parade still winds down Main Street and neighbors wave from the sidewalk. For families, Ralston packs a surprising amount of fun into just a few square miles.
Game Night at the Arena
The centerpiece of Ralston's entertainment scene is the arena on 72nd Street, now known as Liberty First Credit Union Arena (many locals still call it Ralston Arena). This multi-use venue is home to the Omaha Beef indoor football team and hosts concerts, family shows, and community events throughout the year. Catching a Beef game is loud, affordable, family fun, and the arena also has an adjacent community ice rink for public skating. Check our Omaha family events calendar to see what is on the schedule during your visit.
Cool Off at the Pool
Summers in Ralston mean the aquatics center. The Ralston pool, over on Q Street, is a longtime favorite with more than 200,000 gallons of water, a diving board, and a fun splash pad complete with a big blue heron named Hector who dumps a bucket of water on delighted kids below. The season typically runs from late May through early August, so it is a perfect weekday afternoon plan when you need to burn off some summer energy. Always double-check current hours before you load up the swim bags.
Stroll Historic Main Street
Ralston's Main Street is the heart of the community and one of the things that gives the town its charming, walkable character. It hosts seasonal community events and gatherings throughout the year, and it is a nice place to park the car and walk as a family, popping into local shops and grabbing a bite. The town's community calendar tends to fill up around holidays and warm-weather weekends, and the annual Independence Day celebration is a real highlight, with a parade and fireworks that draw families from all over the metro.
Parks and Green Space
Ralston is dotted with friendly neighborhood parks that are ideal for an easy afternoon. Wildewood Park and other city green spaces offer playgrounds, ball fields, and open room to run, and the town's compact size means you are never far from a place to picnic. Pack a lunch, bring a ball, and let the kids play. For a bigger outdoor adventure nearby, Zorinsky Lake and its trails are just a short drive west.
Grab a Bite
Ralston has a friendly, local dining scene with family-owned spots and casual favorites where kids feel welcome. A ballgame, a splash at the pool, and a relaxed dinner add up to an easy, budget-friendly day.
Make It a Neighborhood Tour
Ralston's small-town warmth makes it a lovely counterpoint to Omaha's bigger, busier districts. If you enjoy exploring the metro's distinct neighborhoods, you will also want to read our Old Market family guide for a very different but equally beloved corner of the city. Whether you come for a game, the pool, a parade, or just a quiet walk down Main Street, Ralston reminds you that some of the best family memories are made close to home.
