A Family Guide to West Omaha
West Omaha is where families come to shop, dine, and get outside. From Village Pointe to Walnut Creek Lake, here's a warm, practical guide to a full family day out west.
West Omaha is where much of the city's family life happens these days. It is the land of wide streets, newer neighborhoods, big shopping centers, and easy access to some genuinely beautiful lakes and trails. If you are looking for a day that mixes a little retail, a good family meal, and time outdoors, the west side delivers. Here is how to make the most of it.
Shop and Play at Village Pointe
The anchor of West Omaha's shopping scene is Village Pointe, an open-air center near 168th and Dodge with more than sixty stores and restaurants. It is a pleasant place to walk as a family, with a cozy, strollable layout and shops ranging from Apple to Lululemon. In the summer, the center often hosts a live music series on warm evenings, which turns an ordinary shopping trip into a fun family outing. Check our Omaha family events calendar to see what is happening while you are out west.
Family Dining
West Omaha may have the metro's densest concentration of family-friendly restaurants. Around Village Pointe alone you will find crowd-pleasers like North Italia, Cheddar's Scratch Kitchen, Firebirds Wood Fired Grill, and casual spots that welcome kids with open arms. The broader Legacy and 168th Street corridors are packed with additional options for every craving. Before you pick a spot, browse our kids eat free guide to find deals that keep dinner affordable for the whole crew.
Get Outside at the Lakes
Here is West Omaha's best-kept secret for families: the lakes are close and they are wonderful. Just south in Papillion, Walnut Creek Lake and Recreation Area wraps a 105-acre reservoir with a paved path perfect for biking, a playground, picnic spots, and great fishing. It is open daily and connects into the broader metro trail system, so you can go as short or as long as little legs allow.
A little farther, Chalco Hills Recreation Area surrounds Wehrspann Lake and offers miles of scenic loop trails, wide-open prairie, a swimming beach, and a nature center. Both spots are ideal for a picnic, a bike ride, or simply letting the kids explore. Pack water, sunscreen, and a curious spirit.
More to Explore
West Omaha also puts you within an easy drive of some of the city's biggest family attractions, and the newer neighborhoods out here have plenty of parks and splash pads tucked into them. It is a part of town built for busy families, with convenience and green space side by side.
Plan Your Day
A great West Omaha day might start with a morning at Walnut Creek Lake, roll into lunch near Village Pointe, and finish with a little shopping or an evening concert. It is relaxed, it is affordable if you plan ahead, and it is a wonderful showcase of how much room this side of the city gives families to spread out and enjoy themselves.
If you like getting to know Omaha one neighborhood at a time, you will also enjoy our Old Market family guide, a completely different but equally worthwhile corner of the metro. For a full official directory of what is nearby, the Visit Omaha site is a helpful planning tool. However your day comes together, West Omaha makes it easy to shop, eat, and get outside all in one trip.
