Day Trip: The Strategic Air Command & Aerospace Museum
Just off I-80 in Ashland, the Strategic Air Command & Aerospace Museum is a perfect rainy-day family day trip. Giant aircraft, hands-on kids' exhibits, and a planetarium await.
Some of the best family adventures are just a short drive away, and the Strategic Air Command and Aerospace Museum is proof. Located in Ashland, right off Interstate 80 about halfway between Omaha and Lincoln, it is roughly a 30-minute drive from Omaha and one of the most impressive indoor attractions in the whole region. When the weather turns gray or the kids need somewhere big to roam, this is the day trip to keep in your back pocket.
Walk Among Giants
The first thing that gets everyone, from toddlers to grandparents, is the sheer scale. The museum houses dozens of historic aircraft and missiles inside two enormous glass-and-steel hangars. You will stand beneath towering bombers, sleek reconnaissance jets, and Cold War missiles that reach toward the ceiling. Kids crane their necks and go quiet, and then they start asking a hundred questions. It is history you can walk right up to, and the scale of it sparks imaginations in a way no screen ever could.
Hands-On Fun for Kids
This is not a look-but-do-not-touch kind of museum. There is a children's interactive gallery designed for hands-on learning, where little ones can climb, build, and experiment. The museum also offers motion-simulator rides, an inflatable space bouncer for the youngest visitors, and rotating activities that keep energetic kids engaged. It strikes a great balance: enough real history to satisfy the grown-ups, and enough hands-on play to keep the little ones happy for hours.
Reach for the Stars in the Planetarium
Do not miss the planetarium, where the whole family can lean back and take in an immersive journey through the stars and planets. It is a wonderful, restful break in the middle of a busy museum day, and it adds a dose of wonder that ties the whole aerospace theme together. Planetarium shows carry a small additional charge on top of admission, so plan for it when you buy tickets.
Know Before You Go
The museum is open daily, generally from morning into the late afternoon, with slightly different hours on weekends, and it is closed on a handful of major holidays. Admission is very reasonable, with discounted rates for children, seniors, and military, and little ones three and under get in free. Because everything is indoors and climate-controlled, it is an ideal plan for a rainy day, a scorching afternoon, or a snowy winter weekend. For current hours, ticket prices, and show times, check the official SAC Aerospace Museum website before you head out.
Make a Half-Day or Full-Day of It
Most families spend two to three hours here, though aviation-loving kids could happily stay longer. There is a cafe on site for a quick bite, and a gift shop that is hard to leave without a model plane or two. Because Ashland sits right between Omaha and Lincoln, you can easily pair the museum with other nearby stops to round out the day, or simply enjoy the easy drive home.
