Rainy Day Date Ideas in Omaha

Explore Omaha· July 2, 2026

A rainy day doesn't cancel date night, it just moves it indoors. Here are our favorite ways to spend a wet Omaha afternoon or evening together, from a free museum wander to a movie at the Dundee to a slow dessert crawl.

The forecast said sixty percent and by the time we pulled out of the driveway it was coming down sideways. We'd planned a walk. That was the whole date. And there we sat in the car in the Hy-Vee lot, wipers going, both of us half-laughing at how fast the plan fell apart. So we changed it. Drove downtown, ducked into a museum, and ended up having one of the better afternoons we'd had in weeks.

Here's what I've learned about rain in this town. It doesn't cancel the date. It just moves it inside. And Omaha, once you know where to look, is loaded with good indoor places to spend a wet afternoon or a gray evening with the person you married. So the next time the sky opens up, don't reach for the remote. Reach for one of these.

Start with a museum, because a rainy day is what museums were built for. The Joslyn Art Museum reopened in 2024 after a big expansion, and general admission is free, always, which makes it maybe the best rainy-day date in the city. Wander the galleries slow, argue about which painting you'd hang over the couch, sit on a bench in the sculpture garden atrium and just talk. It's open Tuesday through Sunday, closed Mondays, with late hours on Wednesday and Thursday if you want an evening of it. Or head to the Durham Museum down in the Old Market, the old Union Station with its gorgeous art-deco great hall. Tuesday evenings are five bucks a head from five to eight (as of July 2026 — confirm current pricing and hours at their site), which is about as cheap as a date gets. Both are a short walk from somewhere to eat after, which matters when it's pouring.

When you want the lights down and nobody talking, catch a movie at Film Streams. This is the nonprofit art-house that runs the historic Dundee Theater and the Ruth Sokolof downtown, and it's a different animal than the multiplex. Independents, documentaries, the occasional old classic on the big screen. The Dundee especially has that worn-in, everybody-loves-this-place feel, and there's a little bar tucked inside. Grab two seats, split a popcorn, and let the rain do its thing outside while you're somewhere warm and dark.

Or make it a dessert crawl, which is exactly what it sounds like and exactly as good as it sounds. Pick two or three spots off our Omaha bakeries guide and go split something small at each one. A pastry here, a scoop somewhere else, a coffee to warm your hands. The rain gives you a reason to linger at every table instead of rushing to the next thing. If coffee's more your speed, our coffee shop dates guide has the independent shops we keep going back to, and a window seat with rain running down the glass is honestly one of the coziest date setups there is.

Want to actually do something with your hands? A wine tasting is a good rainy-afternoon move, and Corkscrew Wine & Cheese over in Blackstone and Rockbrook runs a free Tasting Tuesday from four to six (as of July 2026 — confirm current times at their site), plus they've got the cheese to go with it. It's a low-key way to try a few things you wouldn't normally order and figure out what the two of you actually like. Slow, warm, a little bit fancy without trying too hard.

If you'd rather move around, go bowling. There's something about a rainy day that makes a bowling alley feel exactly right, the noise and the lights and the two of you being competitive over something that doesn't matter at all. Our family entertainment centers guide rounds up the bowling, arcade and laser-tag spots around town, and most of them are just as fun on a date as they are with the kids. Loser buys the nachos.

Here's a quieter one people forget about. The Henry Doorly Zoo has the Scott Aquarium, the biggest aquarium inside any zoo in the country, and walking that dim blue tunnel with the sharks gliding overhead is weirdly romantic on a rainy day. Most of the zoo's best buildings, the aquarium, the Desert Dome, the rainforest, are fully indoors, so a wet day is actually a great time to go when the crowds thin out.

And when you just want somewhere calm to be together, browse a bookstore. The Bookworm out at 90th and Center has been Omaha's independent bookstore since 1986, and there's nothing like poking through the shelves next to someone on a rainy afternoon, handing each other things, reading the first page of something out loud. Pick each other a book. Cheap gift, big feeling.

Cap any of these with a cozy dinner and you've got a whole rainy date without ever needing an umbrella for more than the walk from the car. Our family-friendly restaurants list has warm, easy spots all over town if you want somewhere to land after.

Here's the thing about a rainy day that took us too long to see. It slows everything down, and slow is good for a marriage. There's no yard to mow, no reason to be anywhere, no sun making you feel like you're wasting the day if you're not out in it. Rain gives you permission to just be two people inside somewhere warm, doing something small together. That's not a ruined date. That's the good stuff.

So next time the sky goes gray, don't sigh at it. Pick one of these, grab your person, and go. God sends the rain too, and some of the best afternoons of our marriage have happened because a plan fell apart and we had to make a better one.

Prices and hours change, so always confirm the latest on each place's official website before you go — the figures in this guide are current as of July 2026.
