Winter Fun in Omaha: Sledding, Ice Skating and Snow Days
The family-first guide to an Omaha winter, covering the best sledding hills, where to ice skate, warm indoor escapes, hot chocolate, holiday lights, and a quieter zoo in the cold.
First good snow of the year and the whole house changes. Somebody's digging for the other glove, the driveway needs shoveling, and every kid in the neighborhood is already dragging a sled toward the nearest hill. Omaha winters are long, but they don't have to mean four months of screens and cabin fever. Here's the family-first plan for making the cold months actually fun, built around real Omaha spots.
Start where every Omaha kid starts. The sledding hill.
The classic in the middle of the city is Memorial Park, up on Underwood Avenue, a long open slope that works for little kids and big kids both. You'll find the details on the City of Omaha Parks page for Memorial Park. Elmwood Park and Roberts Park both have well-loved hills too, and half the fun is that the good ones fill up with families the second there's enough snow to slide on. One honest heads-up: the City of Omaha Parks and Recreation notes that sledding is an at-your-own-risk activity and isn't officially designated at any park, and it's flatly prohibited at dam sites like Standing Bear Lake. So skip the dam areas, stick to the open grassy hills, walk it once before you let the kids bomb down it, and keep the youngest ones off the steep stuff. Helmets aren't overkill.
When you want ice under your feet instead of snow, Omaha has real rinks.
Baxter Arena's Holland Ice out by UNO runs affordable public skate sessions open to all ages, with rental skates right there so you don't need to own a pair. It's indoor, warm-ish, and a solid first-timer spot. On the city side, Motto McLean Ice Arena runs public skate windows through the week at a low price, a longtime Omaha rink that's easy on the budget. And out west, Moylan Tranquility Iceplex on West Maple has public skating most days of the week with rentals and concessions. Rink schedules shift with hockey bookings and holidays, so pull up the public skate times on each rink's site the morning you want to go, rather than guessing.
Some days it's just too cold, or the wind's howling, and nobody's going outside. That's fine. Have a warm-up plan ready.
Omaha is loaded with indoor spots built for exactly these afternoons. Our guide to the best indoor play places in Omaha covers the climb-and-crawl kind of spots that burn off a snow day's worth of energy, and our roundup of rainy day activities for Omaha families works just as well when it's a snow day. Both are the difference between a good afternoon and everybody climbing the walls by two o'clock.
And here's the one people forget in January. The zoo is open.
Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium runs year-round on winter hours starting November 1, and honestly, winter might be the smartest time to go. The crowds are gone, and those famous indoor exhibits, the Desert Dome, the Lied Jungle, the Aquarium, are warm, humid, and completely uncrowded on a cold Tuesday. It's tropical inside while it's snowing outside. Our full family guide to the Henry Doorly Zoo works for a winter visit too, just aim for the indoor buildings and check the day's hours before you drive over.
No winter outing is complete without the payoff at the end. Hot chocolate.
Build it into the day. Sledding hill first, then somewhere warm for a cocoa with a mountain of whipped cream. Half the reason kids agree to come home is knowing the hot chocolate's coming. Plenty of Omaha coffee shops and bakeries pour a good one, and honestly the homemade version on your own stove after a cold afternoon is hard to beat. It's a small ritual, but it's the part they'll ask for again next year.
If it's the holiday stretch of winter, don't miss the lights either. We mapped out the whole season in our guide to where to see Christmas lights in Omaha, from the free glow at The RiverFront to the big drive-through shows. A slow cruise past a street that's gone all-out with the heater running and cocoa in the cupholders is one of the easiest winter nights there is.
A few things that make Omaha winters go smoother, learned the hard way. Layer everybody, and pack an extra pair of gloves and socks in the car, because wet mittens end a sledding trip fast. Keep outings short when it's bitter cold; forty good minutes beats two miserable hours. And don't fight the weather so much as work with it. A snow day off school isn't a problem to solve, it's a free morning, and the sledding hill is right there.
One last thought. The winters here feel long in the moment, but the sledding years are short. The window where they beg to go back up the hill one more time doesn't last. Bundle up and go while they still ask.
