Fun and Active Date Ideas in Omaha
Sometimes the best date isn't sitting across a table, it's throwing an axe, rolling a strike, or climbing a wall together. Here are the fun, active date ideas around Omaha we keep coming back to, with the cost and the vibe for each.
My wife beat me at axe throwing on our first try and I have not heard the end of it since. We were standing in a lane at Flying Timber down by the Old Market, both of us laughing, both of us terrible at it, and she stuck a bullseye like she'd been doing it for years. That was three years ago. She still brings it up. And honestly? That's the whole point.
Some nights you don't want the candlelit dinner. You want to do something. Get out of your head, get a little competitive, laugh at how bad you both are at whatever it is. An active date breaks up the routine in a way that sitting across a table doesn't, and Omaha's got no shortage of ways to do it. Here are the ones we send couples to, with what it'll run you and what kind of night it is.
Start with axe throwing, because it's more fun than it has any right to be. Flying Timber sits right by the Old Market and was the first axe-throwing spot in Nebraska, and the lanes are safe and easy to figure out even if you've never done it. Over on Leavenworth, Craft Axe Throwing has fifteen lanes and cold craft beer, and walk-ins are welcome. Figure twenty to thirty bucks a person for an hour, and it's a great one because it's low-pressure and there's always trash talk. Book ahead on weekends.
Can't beat bowling for a classic. Out west, Lucky Strike Elkhorn on Cumberland Drive has forty lanes plus arcade games, laser tag, a sports bar and fire pits, so you can turn one game into a whole night. It's the same setup we love for family outings in our family entertainment centers guide, but after 8 it turns into a legit grown-up date. Grab a lane, split a basket of something fried, and keep score for real. Costs vary by time of night, usually cheaper early in the week.
Want to actually break a sweat? Approach Climbing Gym on South 72nd has a big bouldering area and roped walls with a hundred and fifty routes, and here's why it's a sneaky-great date: you have to trust each other. One of you climbs, the other spots or belays, and you're cheering each other up the wall the whole way. A day pass runs around twenty dollars, gear rental's a few more, and no experience needed. It's the kind of date you'll still be talking about because you did something a little brave together.
For a lower-key active night, Topgolf over by Westroads on North 102nd is hard to beat. You don't have to be good at golf, that's the beauty of it. You rent a bay, they bring you food and drinks, and you take turns whacking balls at glowing targets while you actually talk. Bays run by the hour and are cheaper in the morning, half-price on Tuesdays, and a bay holds both of you plus friends if you want to make it a double date.
If you two like a puzzle, book an escape room. Get Out: Omaha in the Old Market has several themed rooms, and there's nothing like being locked in a room with a ticking clock to find out how well you two work as a team. Spoiler: you'll either crush it together or laugh about how you didn't. Around thirty dollars a person, an hour long, and a perfect first-half of a downtown night before you go grab dinner.
When the weather's good, take it outside. Rent bikes or bring your own and ride out over the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge, put one foot in Nebraska and one in Iowa, and keep going on the riverfront trails. It's free, it's beautiful at golden hour, and it connects to miles of paved path. We mapped the best of them in our Omaha bike trails guide. Pack a couple waters and just ride until you feel like turning around.
And for something goofy and easy, go play mini golf or hit the go-karts. It's cheap, it's silly, and silly is underrated in a marriage. We rounded up the best spots in our mini golf and go-karts guide, and any of them make for a laid-back hour where the only thing on the line is bragging rights. Which, if you're competitive like us, is plenty.
Here's what all of these have going for them. They give you something to do with your hands and your feet, which frees up the talking to happen sideways, easy, without the pressure of staring across a table trying to think of what to say. Some of the best conversations my wife and I have had happened while we were both bad at something together. There's a looseness that shows up when you're laughing.
So pick one this week. Something a little out of your normal. Lose gracefully, or don't. Cheer when your spouse sticks the axe or sinks the putt or makes it to the top of the wall. God gave you a partner to have fun with, not just to split chores with, and an afternoon of doing something a little dumb and a little brave together is a real, honest way to remember that.
